Project: Faith Presbyterian Church
Location: Birmingham, AL
Architecture & Interior Design: KPS Group
Flooring Installation: Brian's Flooring
Flooring: Manitoba collection, color Thompson — random-length plank (sanctuary) and herringbone (common areas)

For decades, Faith Presbyterian Church has been a fixture of the Valleydale Road community in Birmingham. As the congregation grew and its ministry needs evolved, the church saw an opportunity to rethink how its campus could better serve its people. The result is a new sanctuary and a reimagined children's ministry area, designed by KPS Group to honor the church's longstanding traditions while welcoming its future.

Design Goals

The design team set out to create a worship environment that feels both rooted and open. Natural light moves through the new sanctuary, and a carefully considered layout reinforces a sense of warmth without sacrificing architectural clarity. Beyond the sanctuary, the children's ministry renovation introduces a dedicated drop-off zone and enhanced security measures, creating a safe, welcoming environment for families, while new classroom and gathering spaces support a growing program.

Material selection played a central role in achieving that balance. In a space built for reflection and community, the materials needed to feel warm, honest, and built to last.

Manitoba Wood Flooring

South Cypress was proud to supply wood flooring from our Manitoba collection in the color Thompson throughout the project. A character-grade red oak with a 3/4" engineered construction, Manitoba brings natural texture and variation that suits a space meant to feel established from the day it opens.

Sanctuary with Manitoba wood flooring in Thompson, random-length planks

In the sanctuary, random-length planks run the length of the room, giving the space a calm, traditional foundation that complements the natural light overhead.

In the common areas, the same Thompson planks were installed in a herringbone pattern, marking the transition into gathering spaces with a more tailored moment. Using one collection and color across two installation patterns keeps the campus visually unified while letting each space carry its own character.

Craftsmanship in the Installation

Brian's Flooring handled the installation, including the herringbone work in the common areas, a pattern that leaves no room for imprecision. The finished floors are a credit to their craft.

Why This Project Matters

Churches are among the most personal projects a design team can take on. The spaces need to serve worship, community, and family life at once, and the materials underfoot quietly shape how all of it feels. We're honored to have played a role in a project that gives the Faith Presbyterian congregation a beautiful, durable foundation for its next chapter.
